Morecambe blitz leaves Garnett ruing ‘sloppy’ defending

TRANMERE crashed to defeat the hands of a strong and experienced Morecambe side after conceding three goals in 13 second-half minutes at Christie Park.

Rovers looked to be having the better of an entertaining totesport.com League Cup encounter as they led 3-2 at the hour mark thanks to goals from Charlie Barnett, Luis Corrigan and Luke Waterfall. But Morecambe, who included nine first-team players picking up some much-needed match practice, turned the contest around with goals on 70, 77 and 83 minutes.

Tranmere’s sloppy defending was a let-down for coach Shaun Garnett. He said: “The disappointing thing was that all three of the late goals were preventable. They were down to poor defending. We have been conceding goals far too easily in recent games.

“On the plus side it was a competitive game and a good fitness work out for our players.”
