Jennings declares Rovers will make the play-offs

STEVE JENNINGS reckons he is speaking for every player in the Tranmere dressing-room when he says: “We think we can make the play-offs now.”

The midfielder was a youngster on the fringe of the first-team when Rovers last secured a play-off spot under Brian Little four years ago.

Now Ronnie Moore’s team hold sixth place in the League One Table with three games to go after securing maximum points from Easter holiday wins over Walsall and Hereford United.

Scunthorpe, two points behind in seventh place, have two games in hand but Tranmere can draw level on points with fifth placed Leeds United by winning at Elland Road on Saturday.

Jennings said: “This is as good a chance as we have had since we got into the play-offs in 2005.

“It’s an exciting situation and I think there are a few more twists and turns to come.

“The more I look at the league tables and the matches the contenders have left, the more I think we have a great chance of success.

“Everyone looks back on the season and can pick out some iffy results we’ve had along the way but overall I think we can look at what we have achieved so far and say we have done well with a small squad.

“Perhaps one or two results need to go our way over the next couple of weeks but I think there’s a very good chance we can go into the last game at Scunthorpe with a play-off spot within our grasp.”

Tranmere pulled themselves back in to the promotion frame with a sequence of six wins in the last eight games. Meanwhile Leeds lost for the first time in 11 matches to leaders Leicester City at the Walker’s Stadium on Easter Monday.

Jennings added: “Leeds and Scunthorpe will say their fate is in their own hands but I think it will come down to what we do in the three games we have left.

“We won at Leeds last season and we believe we can win there again.”

Tranmere will have to chase that victory without defensive strongman Ian Goodison, who has been hit by a four match suspension after being sent off for a dangerous tackle in the Hereford game.

Jennings said: “You could see from Ian’s face in the dressing-room on Monday evening that he is gutted about what’s happened. Aaron Cresswell was gutted about not playing after Andrew Taylor came back into the same game.

“Everyone wants to be involved and you need that competition and spirit in the dressing-room. Everyone knows we don’t have the biggest of squads here. To a certain degree we have been punching above our weight.

“But we are coming strong towards the end of the season and some good players could not even get onto the bench on Monday.”

Jennings hopes he can shake off a breathing problem in time for the Leeds game. The condition forced the 24-year-old to leave the action early in the two Easter games.

He explained: “It seems there is some acid trapped at the bottom of my windpipe and I’m feeling out of breath when I have made a run. The gaffer understands the problem and I’m hoping the medication I’ve been taking this week will sort it out.

“I was glad we were 2-0 up when I had to come off against Hereford. That was a must-win game and although we did not play that well, the all-important thing was the three points.”

Leeds manager Simon Grayson wants his team to secure nine points from their last three matches and head into the play-offs on a winning streak.

He said: “I want to take all the positives we’ve had over the past two months into the last weeks of the season.

“The players will be fine after the Leicester defeat because we never looked like we were going to get beaten. They can be disappointed but we’ll get that out of our system quickly and be ready for Tranmere.”
