Ronnie Moore positive about Tranmere Rovers’ vital visit to fellow play-offs hopefuls Leeds United

MANAGER Ronnie Moore believes Tranmere are capable of opening up a new front in the battle for a League One play-off spot by winning at Leeds United tomorrow.

Moore acknowledges Leeds, with home advantage, are the bookmakers’ favourites to claim a victory that would all but secure a top six finish for the Yorkshire giants.

But Moore is convinced his underdogs can spring a surprise in front of a huge crowd, predicted to top 25,000.

Should Tranmere repeat the 2-0 success they achieved at Elland Road last season, they will draw level with fifth-placed Leeds on 75 points with two games remaining.

Moore said: "This is a massive game for both clubs. At the moment, everyone is talking about ourselves, Scunthorpe and Southend fighting it out for sixth spot. If we can win at Leeds it really does open up the race for fifth place.

"I think everyone expects Leeds to win and every bookmaker will give you a home win as the favourite outcome. But I don’t see it like that. We all know football does not always run true to form."

Moore insists his side won’t be intimidated by the largest crowd they’ve played in front of this season. He said: "Going to Elland Road holds no fears for us. We won there last year and we know we have to win again. We are not going there to defend and I think it’s going to be an open, attacking game.

"I think Leeds are going to come at us as well, although they would be happier with a draw than us.

"So we have to do everything we can to win the game and close the gap – without doing anything silly. If we get the opportunity to push wingers and full-backs forward, we will take it."

Tranmere will be attempting to put a dent in a Leeds home record that stands comparison to their own. Both teams boast an impressive 15 victories in front of their own supporters and both have been less convincing on the road.

Manager Simon Grayson, head- hunted from Blackpool to replace the sacked Gary McAllister in December, has succeeded in steadying Leeds’ results.

A loss to a late goal by leaders Leicester City on Easter Monday was the first reverse in 11 games.
