Five-star Tranmere Rovers thrash young Latics

TRANMERE notched their first Puma Youth Alliance victory in five games with a handsome success against Oldham Athletic at Raby Vale.

Chris Rimmer struck twice as Rovers demonstrated the greater firepower, scoring four of their goals from set plays. The home side’s other scorers were Ross Rule, Connor Roberts and Jay Gibbs.

Both teams agreed to field under-17 line-ups featuring first-year trainees and school of excellence players.

Coach Sean Garnett said: “We needed a win after a difficult few weeks for the lads.

“The scoreline may have flattered us slightly but we played some good attractive football and took our chances.”

Tranmere complete their Youth Alliance programme with a home game against Shrewsbury Town at Raby Vale on Saturday, kick-off 11am.

TRANMERE: Collister, Pursehouse, Rimmer, Baker, Benson, Power, Gibbs, Roberts, Mackreth, Ashcroft, Rule.
