Former Liverpool FC winger John Barnes vows to prove he can be a success at Tranmere Rovers

John Barnes and Jason McAteer are unveiled at Tranmere

He has inherited just 11 players with first team experience.

Barnes said: "Getting players in is a big factor. Players have been released and looking at the squad it is quite thin.

"We are not able to sign players for high wages or for transfer fees, which is fine.

"In this day and age a lot of clubs are using loan signings and getting players in on free transfers – and that’s the route we’re going to have to go down.

"But I think getting a playing structure on board in terms of a philosophy, a style and sense of how we want to play is the most important factor. We need to get that down early.

"Throughout all the leagues, the teams who can organise themselves, get a style the players understand across, are successful.

"We have to create an environment which the players are used to and which will bring out the best in them.

"My football philosophy is a very simple way of playing. Obviously you have to implement something the players can actually do.

"If I ask them to play like Real Madrid it possibly wouldn’t work.

"But I took lessons from my time at Jamaica, where we had players of similar quality. If you organise them, and get them playing in a similar role, without making things too complicated, you can be consistent.

"Getting a system down as early as possible which the players understand will help that process of consistency."

Pre-season starts on July 1 and Barnes believes the experience he boasts will stand him in good stead for the challenges ahead.

"Once you are involved in professional football you are always under pressure," he said.

"Celtic came with its own pressure, Jamaica came with unbelievable pressure because of certain political situations.

"At Tranmere there will be pressure to get results, pressure to get good performances, and fans will come if they like what they see.

"It’s an unusual situation because Tranmere weren’t unsuccessful – they were only two minutes away from the play-offs.

"It is a fresh start for me but it is no different preparing a team for a league match than it is an international match."

Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson added: "I am delighted John has agreed to become our manager as he was our first choice for the position.

"With John and Jason as the club’s management team they bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and contacts within the game.

"They are a Wirral-based partnership who are very enthusiastic about what they can offer Tranmere and I look forward to watching their team play next season.

"They have both had successful careers as players and hopefully they can be successful together in management at Tranmere."
