John Barnes re-signs cup hero Alan Mahon - Tranmere Rovers latest

MANAGER John Barnes rekindled memories of Tranmere's exciting past when he completed the signing of Alan Mahon last night.

The 31-year-old Irish midfielder, who was a rising star when he he figured in some of Rovers' giantkilling cup exploits almost a decade ago, agreed a three-year contract.

Mahon, whose professional career began at Prenton Park in 1995, was looking for a new club after being released by Burnley at the end of last season.

Barnes said: “It’s great to have Alan back as he is a very talented midfielder.

“We’re fortunate to have got a player of Alan’s quality to commit himself to the club for three seasons. He is a former favourite of the Tranmere fans and I’m sure they’ll look forward to seeing him in action again at Prenton Park.

“He will add experience to what will be a young squad next season.”

Mahon added: “I’m thrilled to come back to the club that started my career.
