Burscough suffer second-half slump to lose 5-2 against Clitheroe

BURSCOUGH conceded four goals in the last half-hour against Clitheroe at Shawbridge to slump to defeat in a game that they looked to have comfortably under control.

The Linnets had swept into the lead with goals in the eighth and ninth minutes from Matt Parry.

It was only after manager Andy Gray started making changes just before the hour that Burscough leaked three goals in a six-minute spell, turning the game on its head.

Clitheroe’s fightback began seconds before the interval when Zak Clarke twisted and cut in from the right and fired the ball past Zak Jones.

The game then changed completely on the hour, though perhaps significantly Gray had made changes moments before.

Ex-Burscough youngster Dave Dempsey hit a thunderous free-kick that Jones did well to parry. The ball dropped straight to Clarke and he lifted the ball into the far corner from close range.

In the 64th minute, indecision in the Burscough backline allowed Alan Corr to run onto a long ball down the pitch, the number nine using the time to give Jones no chance as he slotted home.

Two minutes later, Corr made it 4-2 finishing well after appearing to receive the ball in an offside position.

Clitheroe completed their great turnaround just before the end when Craig Sargeson netted.
