Tranmere Rovers’ new loan signing Shaleum Logan impresses on his pre-season debut

SHALEUM LOGAN earned a thumbs-up from manager John Barnes after making his first appearance in a Tranmere shirt at Macclesfield.

The 20-year-old right-back, signed on a season-long loan from Manchester City over the weekend, played the full 90 minutes in a young Rovers side beaten 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at the Moss Rose on Saturday.

Barnes said: “I have known for a while that Logan would be a good addition to the squad.

“He came into the game at Macclesfield having not met any of our players before and he looked very comfortable and confident. He slotted right in.

“He is an intelligent footballer who can adapt to any situation. He’s good on the ball, does not give it away and makes good decisions.”

Logan made his Premier League debut for City in February and enjoyed previous loan spells at Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Stockport County.

He has permission from his club to play in all three cup competitions for Tranmere this season.

Logan’s arrival signalled the departure of George Abbey.

The former Macclesfield and Rochdale defender featured in several of Tranmere’s pre-season games this summer.

Barnes said: “While George did well while he was here and showed a great attitude, the financial situation is such that we were not able to offer him anything contract wise.”

Barnes admitted he had little choice but to put out a youthful line-up at Macclesfield after Rovers played a full strength side in a friendly against a Liverpool XI at Prenton Park the night before.

He said: “We had to make changes and some of the players still had to play a part in both games – like Ash Taylor, Craig Curran and Ryan Fraughan. I could not ask anything more from them.”

Tranmere play their next pre-season game at Morecambe tomorrow (7.45pm).
