Luke Daniels wants Tranmere Rovers promotion

TRANMERE goalkeeper Luke Daniels finds himself in opposition to the former team-mates with whom he shared a thrilling promotion challenge last season, when Shrewsbury Town visit Prenton Park for a warm-up game tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).

Daniels, 20, who is starting a season-long loan to Rovers from West Brom, spent the 2008/09 campaign on a similar arrangement at the New Meadow, helping the Shrews to reach the League Two play-off final.

It ended in a near miss as Shrewsbury lost 1-0 to Gillingham at Wembley. Now Daniels says he is looking to “go one better with Tranmere” and build up his experience at a higher level with John Barnes’ team.

He said: “I played 40 odd games last season and I’m hoping to do the same again at Tranmere. I want to be playing every week, improving myself as a goalkeeper and hopefully getting this club pushing towards promotion.

“Getting to the play-offs with Shrewsbury last season was a great experience for me to have so early in my career.

“I’m disappointed we did not win in the end but I think having that experience behind me can only help in the future. Here’s hoping I can go one better with Tranmere this season.”

Daniels was born and brought up in Bolton and spent eight years learning the game in the Manchester United Academy.

Following his release by United, Daniels joined Albion’s youth set-up in 2004 but is yet to break into the first team.

Scott Carson and Dean Kiely currently stand ahead of him in the goalkeeping pecking order at the Hawthorns and the decision to come out on loan for another season was an easy one to make.

Daniels said: “There were a few options for me this summer but after speaking to family and friends, Tranmere seems like the best move for me.

“It gives me the chance to get more experience of a higher level than last season. Hopefully in 12 months time I can go back to West Brom and push for my place there.”
