Luke Daniels wants Tranmere Rovers promotion

Albion underlined their faith in Daniels’s potential by offering the youngster a new contract this summer, which he signed shortly before starting work with Rovers.

Shrews’ fans are likely to give Daniels a warm reception. He became a local hero by saving two spot-kicks in the penalty shoot-out that decided the play-off semi-final victory over Bury and won man of the match honours in defeat at Wembley.

Rovers go into the final pre-season friendly of the summer with manager Barnes still attempting to fill defensive positions in his trimmed-down squad.

He hopes to recruit a centre-back on loan by the weekend but says he may have to wait until next week for a player to be released.

Meanwhile, Rovers are waiting to hear confirmation that Ian Goodison is on his way back from international duty in Jamaica to rejoin the squad. The return to the UK of the vastly experienced centre-back has been delayed by the issue of a new passport.

Goodison is, in any case, suspended for Tranmere’s opening League One game at Yeovil a week tomorrow, as he completes a four-match ban relating to a dismissal in a game against Hereford last Easter.

So too is Gareth Edds, who has been operating as a stand-in centre-back through most of the pre-season programme. The Australian was sent off for a second bookable offence in Rovers’ final game of last season at Scunthorpe.

Admission to Prenton Park tomorrow will be £8 for adults, £4 for seniors and young persons (17-21) and £3 for juniors. Only the Main Stand, Paddocks and Lower Kop will be open with visiting supporters using the Johnny King Stand.
