Cammell Laird power to top of West Cheshire League Division One
CAMMELL LAIRD sit proudly at the top of West Cheshire League Division One following two 3-0 home victories.
Danny Edwards, Jimmy Jones and a penalty from Anthony Gardener accounted for defending champions, West Kirby.
A brace from Paul McDonnell and a third from Martin Trimble against Castrol Social left Laird with the only perfect record in the division after just three games.
West Kirby got their season back on track with their first league win, 2-0 over much-fancied Halton with goals from Andy Barker and Danny Grannon.
Helsby are scoring for fun with a 5-0 midweek win at Christleton courtesy of a brace from Gary Lunt with Jonathon McDonald, Gas Gerrard and John Coady adding to Christleton’s woe.
So it was something of a surprise when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to newly-promoted Willaston.
It has been a very happy week in the Lloyd household. Upton skipper, Andy Lloyd, missed Upton’s 2-1 win over Blacon as wife, Gemma gave birth to their first son, Owen. To celebrate, Andy scored both Upton goals in their 2-1 win over Ellesmere Port, whose consolation effort came from Mike Jones.
Leading scorer in Division Two, Robbie Stewart, followed up his midweek treble in Ashville’s 3-0 win over West Kirby with another goal against Maghull. The 1-0 win ensured that the Villa Park outfit kept their 100% league record.
However, Ashville are currently placed second in the league behind free-scoring Mossley Hill Athletic. An own goal and strikes from Ben Smythe and Kevin Frankland saw off West Kirby, who have had a torrid week.
Like Mossley Hill and Ashville, early Division Three leaders, Hale have also maintained a flawless record so far. Following their resounding 8-1 demolition of Blacon on the opening day, Hale edged a close encounter against Prescot Cables by the odd goal in three. However they were made to work by Ashville for their third win in an eight goal fiesta.
Ryan Cullen grabbed a splendid hat-trick to add to singles from Graeme Long and Paul Hart. Ashville replied with three goals from Roberts, Kingam and Garry.
The Youth Division competition is underway with three early games to allow for representative and cup football later in the season. Competition debutants, Widnes Town have endured a baptism of fire, opening with games against Cammell Laird at home and South Liverpool away. Both games ended in a 3-1 reverse but observers could not help to be impressed by the determination and ‘never-say-die’ attitude of the Cheshire youngsters.
