THERE will be no FA Trophy run or money for Burscough this season, as they defended poorly in a manic last half-hour at Brigg’s Hawthorns ground.
The drama was largely confined to the second period where Brigg led 2-0 just after the hour.
The Linnets levelled proceedings six minutes from time before the home side went up the other end of the pitch and grabbed a winner.
The first-half was pretty unremarkable, both teams erring on the side of caution with chances at a premium.
But if the first hour had been about as thrilling as a rowing boat crossing a duck pond, the last hour was like crossing the North Sea in a force 10.
The excitement began in the 61st minute. Brigg worked the ball down the left, then from the cross Andrew Holt got ahead of James Connolly and hit the near-post, from the rebound Holt was sharper again, firing the ball in to the net.
Minutes later it was 2-0 to Brigg. The home side
won a free-kick just outside the Linnets penalty area. Matthew Godden looped the ball high over the defensive wall dipping it with perfection into the net.
Burscough, though, hit back, Gary McEvatt thumping a left-foot shot low into the Brigg net.
In the 84th minute Burscough thought they had saved the game. Freddie Potter played a free-kick into the box, Darren Byers knocked it down and the ball went to Dave Roberts who swept in and smashed a powerful left-foot shot low into the corner of the net from 18 yards.
However, too much had gone on since the hour mark, to even consider this game would slump back into inaction. In the 88th minute, Brigg once again went down the left and as the ball went into the box, substitute Jon Walton got ahead of his marker and turned the ball home.
Burscough’s misery was compounded in added time when Jon Goulding was sent-off for a second cautionable offence.
