Cup of cheer for Vodkat League sides as the goals fly in

THERE were goals galore in the Vodkat League Challenge Cup with First Division giant-killers AFC Liverpool edging past Premier Division Alsager Town by the odd goal in five after extra-time.

Dave Ojapah fired the Prescot-based outfit in front on 24 minutes before a brace from Steve Tulloch in a seven-minute spell gave the visitors the lead.

John Kennedy equalised to force the game into extra-time before Martin Bloxham struck the winner to give his side a difficult trip to Glossop North End at the last 16 stage.

Runcorn Linnets were also among the goals as they cantered to a 4-1 win at Cheadle Town, Dave Sherlock, Chris Blundell, Robb Whyte and Paul Fildes being Linnets marksmen. They now travel to Wigan Robin Park at the next stage who defeated Ashton Town 2-1, Steve Edwards netting for Town.

Ashton Athletic sprang a surprise when catering for Nelson in a 5-1 romp. A brace from Paul Prescott with further strikes from Abraham Haderia, Richard Sharpe and a Lucket own goal being on target for Athletic to earn the Brocstedes Park side a visit to Abbey Hey.

Two goals from Daniel O’Connor with a third from Andy Fowler ensured Bootle’s progress over Squires Gate as the new Bucks Park side will now travel to another giant-killing side, Irlam, who knocked out Premier Division Padiham in a seven goal thriller.

Graeme Mitchell of St Helens Town had a game he will quickly want to forget. After hitting his side’s 84th minute winner at Colne, he was immediately sent off.

Formby’s hopes of quick revenge over Newcastle Town who recently gave the Squirrels a six goal thrashing were dashed in extra time after the Stafford side grabbed a 3-1 victory during the additional period, Scott netting the consolation goal.
