Five-star show keeps rampant Southport at the summit

SOUTHPORT fired a further warning shot to the rest of the Blue Square North on Saturday with a stunning win 5-1 over Eastwood Town.

Port went top of the division after their midweek win at Vauxhall and a fifth-minute opening goal from Michael Powell gave the Yellows more reason to cheer.

The mood at Haig Avenue was enhanced just after the break when own goals from McAughtrie and then Turner gave the Sandgrounders a three-goal advantage. However their afternoon took a slight blip when Ashley Winn was dismissed for a second bookable offence after 53 minutes though Eastwood returned the favour on 68 when Turner was sent off.

Liam Watson’s men made it 4-0 when Alan Moogan struck before Nwadike pulled one back for the visitors.

Striker Steve Daly would have the final say however, firing in Southport’s fifth to give them a one point lead at the top of the table.

In the UniBond League Premier Division, Marine beat Ossett Town 2-0 thanks to goals from captain Steve Hussey and a Nathan Hay own goal.

The three points moves Kevin Lynch’s men up one place to 11th in the standings.

Skelmersdale United’s fabulous scoring spree came to an end as they lost out 4-1 at Leigh Genesis in the FA Trophy.

The second qualifying round tie got off to a fine start for Tommy Lawson’s men when Mark Houghton put Skem ahead in the second minute but Jordan Stepien equalised on 21.

Thomas Ince put Leigh in front after 58 before strikes from Jammie Baguley (58) and Jack Dornet (85) sealed the home side’s passage to the next round.

In the UniBond League First Division North, Prescot Cables moved up to 10th by bagging an impressive 3-0 win at Harrogate Railway Athletic thanks to goals from Phil Cooney (24), Mark Calland (55) and Paul Lundon (90).

However, in the First Division South, Cammell Laird dropped to 18th position after losing 2-0 at home to Stamford. Daniel Matson gave the visitors the lead in the fifth minute before Ricky Miller sealed the points two minutes from time.
