WAYNE RILEY secured his place in Northwich Victoria folklore as he scored the winner to knock out League One high-flyers Charlton.
The 18-year-old thrilled the Victoria Stadium crowd – and the watching live TV audience – as he pounced for the late winner just five minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Michael O’Connor’s header put the teenager clear and the substitute coolly slipped the ball past Darren Randolph to seal a place in the second round.
And it was no more than Vics deserved as the Blue Square North outfit made a mockery of the 87 places between the teams throughout the game.
So much so that Phil Parkinson’s side were looking grateful for the heroics of Randolph who looked to have done enough to ensure a replay at The Valley.
The home side dominated the first half, the highlight of which was a remarkable goalmouth scramble in which at least five close range shots were fired at the Addicks goal. Veteran defender Christian Dailly hooked away one of them from Johnny Allan when it looked certain to cross the line.
And the visitors were indebted to Randolph again three minutes before the interval when he somehow clawed out O’Connor’s header after another flick-on from Bailey.
Jonjo Shelvey fired straight at Curtis Aspden on 55 minutes but Northwich remained on top and manager Andy Preece’s secret weapon Riley provided the killer blow nine minutes from time.
Vics will hope for another Victoria Stadium shocker in the second round, as they were drawn at home to Lincoln City form League Two.
Non-League Kettering will take on former FA Cup winners Leeds United in the second round.
The Blue Square Premier side were rewarded for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Hartlepool with a home draw against the runaway Coca-Cola League One leaders, who won the FA Cup in 1972.
Staines Town, conquerors of Shrewsbury in the first round, will face the winners of tpnight’s Millwall versus AFC Wimbledon tie.
