Vodkat League round-up

HEAVY rain decimated the Vodkat League programme for the second successive week, over half the games being lost due to waterlogged pitches.

First Division Ashton Town, however, were singing in the rain after recording their first victory of the season at their 12th attempt at the expense of AFC Liverpool.

The Prescot-based outfit failed to find the net for only the second time this campaign, although spurned many chances before Town netted twice in a four minute spell just after the hour mark.

Lee Compton opened the scoring with Steve Edwards finding the target on 64 minutes to seal the points.

Action in the second round of the FA Vase saw all the drama restricted to the closing minutes of the tie between Winsford United and Northern Counties East side Pickering Town.

Liam Salt opened the scoring for the visitors before Tom Rutter scrambled an equaliser three minutes from time. Just as extra-time was looming, Winsford’s hopes of glory and a tripto Wembley Stadium were shattered when Salt grabbed his second and the winner in stoppage time.

In the same competition, Bootle’s home tie against Stone Dominoes was a victim of the weather and has been re-arranged for Wednesday evening with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Bootle’s second string were also left kicking their heels following their Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup tie against South Sefton Borough being postponed for the second successive week. The game will now be transferred to the Delta Taxis Stadium.
