Carlisle United and Reading lie in wait for Everton FC and Liverpool FC in FA Cup third round

EVERTON will face Carlisle at home in the third round of the FA Cup.

David Moyes’ side were handed the Goodison Park tie in yesterday afternoon’s draw, which took place at Wembley Stadium.

And Everton have an unblemished knockout competitions’ record against the Cumbrians, but the two sides haven’t faced off since the 1976-77 season, when Everton won 2-0 in the League Cup.

Previously, Carlisle had recorded two league wins over Everton in 1974-75 and suffered two defeats in the FA Cup – in 1967-68 and 1929-30.

Former Everton centre-half Derek Mountfield provides a link between the teams, having played for the now-League One outfit in the mid-1990s.

Managed by Greg Abbott, they are currently 17th in League One.

Speaking after Everton’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, midfielder Steven Pienaar said: “I think it’s a good draw for us but at the moment we are thinking about the next game and that is AEK.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool will travel to Championship side Reading.

Rafael Benitez’s side lost their last trip to the Madejski Stadium during the Royals’ second Premier League season in 2007-08 but have won both their League Cup meetings with the Berkshire club in 2006 and 2007.

If Tranmere can win their second round replay at Aldershot Town, they will be rewarded with a visit from Mick McCartney’s Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers at Prenton Park.

FA Cup third round ties will take place on the weekend of January 2/3.
