MANAGER Les Parry plans to step up his attempts to add a new face to Tranmere’s attacking options in the transfer market this week.
Parry says he has made inquiries about three strikers and hopes to be successful in bringing one of them to Prenton Park on a loan deal.
Rovers urgently needed to improve their scoring rate as they fight to climb out of the League One relegation zone.
They last scored in a 2-0 home win over Bristol Rovers on December 19.
Parry said: “We are getting closer in our attempts to bring in a striker.
“We have put in inquiries to two Premier League sides for strikers from their reserve teams and also put in an inquiry for a striker currently playing in our division.
“With a bit of luck one of those three lines will lead to someone joining us.
“We are looking for someone who is a bit different to the players we have got.
“Our front three players (Craig Curran, Terry Gornell, Ian Thomas-Moore) have done a brilliant job for us. They are running their socks off.
“We are looking for someone with some pace but with some height and size – and maybe someone who has a bit of a record in scoring goals.”
Parry has a modest pile of funds available to spend on a new player’s wage after securing a favourable deal to bring centre-back Chris McCready to Prenton Park on a loan from Northampton.
Over the weekend Rovers parted company with striker Michael Ricketts. The former Bolton target-man was recruited by former manager John Barnes in the hope he could revive his flagging career at Prenton Park.
But the 31-year-old wasn’t able to fit into the hard-running demands placed on the attacking players.
After scoring two goals in 16 appearances, many of them short runs as a substitute, Ricketts’ contract, which ran until the end of the season, was terminated by mutual consent.
Parry acknowledged Tranmere’s need to add a fresh dimension to their attacking play after an early strike from Jason Puncheon consigned them to a 10th away defeat of the League One campaign.
“Going behind makes it difficult for us because of the way we play,” Parry admitted.
“We are not set up to go forward in waves to try and score goals.
“It is difficult for us to make changes with the players we have on the bench. We just have a few more of the same type we have on the pitch. We have not got the players to change the way we play.”
Tranmere return to action with a rearranged League One encounter against Yeovil at Prenton Park tomorrow (7.45pm).
