SUPERCONFIDENT Shaleum Logan says he is in no doubt that Tranmere can complete a great relegation escape act at Edgeley Park this weekend.
The young full-back, on a season-long loan from Manchester City, is convinced Rovers will secure a victory over Stockport County to take them to 51 points while at least one of the rivals around them come up short to take the drop into League Two.
“I think we are going to do it,” Logan said. “We got the win over Millwall we needed last Saturday and now it will come down to the last game. I’m sure we can defeat Stockport.
“The belief is there right through the squad. We are quite a quiet group. No-one really says much about what is going on, we just seem to get down and do it.”
Tranmere have been coping with the pressure of trying to escape the division’s bottom four since the early weeks of the season and that is bound to be cranked up as they press for three survival points against a side already consigned to the drop.
Logan believes the Rovers dressing room can handle the occasion. “I don’t think the weight of the world will be on our shoulders,” he said.
“When game time comes at 3pm everyone knows what they should be doing. Everyone knows his job and it’s down to him to do it. I don’t think we deserve to go down in any case. There are 10 or 12 teams in this division who are no better than Tranmere.”
Logan, with close to 40 Rovers games under his belt, has fulfilled his ambition to play regular first-team football for a season rather than wait for an all too rare break into City’s star-studded Premier League side.
The only major blip in the 21-year-old Mancunian’s season was a lay-off, lasting just over a month, for a hernia operation in March.
Logan was back at Prenton Park a week ahead of schedule following the surgery and manager Les Parry’s respect for the full-back’s contribution to the side was such that he was put straight back into the starting line-up for the 1-1 draw at Colchester a fortnight ago. Logan impressed again in the 2-0 win over Millwall.
Logan said: “I’m one of those people who heal quickly.
“After the operation I was asked by the people at City if I felt comfortable going back to Tranmere and I told them that was exactly what I wanted to do.
“The double hernia could have seen my season out but I was always confident I could come back. I wanted to come back.”
Logan’s enthusiasm to return to action underlines his commitment to the Tranmere cause.
He said: “I can understand why some players might feel a bit detached about being on loan to a different club but that’s just not me at all.
“If I do something, I think it’s worth doing well. I’m enjoying being here and I’m doing my best to help this club survive.”
He added: “This season has been a great experience for me. It is making me a better player. At City I was always one of those players who would be on the bench but hardly ever got on. That does not make you feel part of the team at all. Here at Tranmere I feel like I’m one of the first names on the team sheet.”
Logan identifies a 3-0 defeat at Leeds at the end of August as the low point of the season with Rovers. “That was the game when I thought I might not as well have been on the pitch,” Logan said. “I don’t think I got involved in the game at all. I felt gutted when I got home because I knew I could do so much better than that.
“I’m my own harshest critic. I always give 100%. I know I’d tried at Leeds but I don’t think I changed anything in that game.
“The highlights have been the games we’ve won and I’ve played well. I’m hoping the biggest highlight is to come at Stockport.”
Tranmere have lined up an attractive friendly against Nottingham Forest at Prenton Park this summer as part of their pre-season preparations for the 2010/11 campaign.
Rovers will host Forest on Wednesday, July 21. Forest finished third in the Championship this season under the guidance of manager Billy Davies and assistant David Kelly, who served as a player and coach at Prenton Park.
Tranmere play their traditional pre-season friendlies with local amateur teams Cammell Laird and Heswall on Tuesday, July 13 and travel to Marine on Saturday, July 17.
They are due to visit Conference club Mansfield Town on Saturday, July 24.
