Improved fitness was the key to Dale Jennings’ step-up to Tranmere Rovers first team

THE exciting arrival of Dale Jennings on the first-team scene at Tranmere comes as no surprise to the coach who nurtured the youngster’s talent over recent years.

The 17-year-old’s name was on the lips of Tranmere fans everywhere this week after he notched a stunning winning goal in the 1-0 success at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday.

Head of youth Shaun Garnett sensed Jennings was ready to take a big step forward when he reported back to Prenton Park for the start of pre-season training in the summer.

Garnett said: “Dale still has a lot to learn but what we’ve got with him is a little bit of potential.

“He came back in pre-season a lot fitter and gave himself a great chance. On the occasions he has been with the first team this season he has done okay.

“I’m sure the gaffer has plans for him because he is an asset. He is a good lad, a good player and he can score goals.”

Jennings found himself in the first-team frame this month as an early-season pile-up of injuries at Prenton Park bit into manager Les Parry’s selection options.

The youngster made the most of his chance as a second-half substitute against Charlton Athletic 12 days ago, making a positive impression.
