Leighton McGivern is Vauxhall Motors’ late goal hero once again

FOR the second game running, new signing Leighton McGivern scored late on to grab points for Vauxhall Motors.

The man signed from Liverpool County Premier side Waterloo Dock fired home in the 89th minute on Saturday as the Motormen snatched a draw with Blue Square Bet North leaders Nuneaton Town.

Kyle Storer had given the visitors to Rivacre Park a 50th lead from the penalty spot but as he did in midweek against Corby Town to make it 3-2, McGivern popped up in the final minutes to deny the opposition and draw Vauxhall level at 1-1.

Meanwhile, Marine moved up to fifth in the Evo-Stik Premier Division following a fine victory at Matlock Town.

Jon Goulding grabbed the only goal 10 minutes into the second period to seal the Mariners’ 1-0 win and extend their winning run in all competitions to five matches.

Whites’ striker Jamie Rainford buoyed the club before kick-off with the news he would be staying at the Arriva Stadium for now after League One Notts County decided not to offer the 22-year-old a professional contract.

In the Evo-Stik First Division North, Chester thumped Ossett Albion 6-0 to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points.

Mike Wilde struck a hat-trick with Ian Howard hitting a double but the biggest cheer was reserved for new signing Chris Simm who netted on his debut after joining from Southport.

Keeping the leaders in their sights are Skelmersdale United who moved up to fourth after a 2-0 win at Cammell Laird.

Chris Almond opened the scoring at Kirklands on 13 minutes before Paul Woolcott made sure of the points with the second goal in the closing stages.

One place behind Skem are Warrington who were held 1-1 at home to Woodley Sports.

Gavin Salmon handed The Wire the lead just before the interval, but the visitors responded through Chris Smith mid-way through the second period.

Youngster Billy Flynn was Prescot Cables’ hero as his 90th minute goal salvaged a point at Durham City.

Steve Thompson gave the home side a 39th minute lead but Flynn rescued a point.

Runcorn Town’s FA Vase dream ended at the hands of Dunston UTS on Saturday.

Andrew Bulford struck a hat-trick for the North East visitors with James McShane converting a penalty for Runcorn in the fourth round tie.

Only two games involving the region’s Vodkat League sides survived the frost on Saturday as Bootle fell 3-2 at home to New Mills and Runcorn Linnets beat Bacup Borough 2-0.
