Tranmere boss Parry hails ‘a great result’

MANAGER Les Parry declared “that was a great result” after Tranmere returned from Charlton with a point.

A 10th goal of the season from target man Enoch Showunmi earned Rovers a repeat of the 1-1 draw they secured against the Addicks at Prenton Park in September and at The Valley in the corresponding fixture last season.

Parry said: “I know Charlton were on the back of four defeats but they are still one of the best teams in the division. I think they will end up in the play-offs. So the result was a great one for us.

“I thought we were the better side in the first half. Charlton had a lot of possession but did not hurt us. I think our goalkeeper touched the ball about three times.

“I was delighted for Enoch scoring the goal and getting into double figures for the season. Zoumana Bakayogo did very well to nick the ball off Simon Francis and it was a great through pass for Enoch and a great finish.”

Tranmere were pegged back by an equaliser from Miguel Llera nine minutes after the restart. The centre back’s free-kick took a deflection on its way past goalkeeper Tony Warner.

Parry said: “At half-time we encouraged the players not to drop back. So what is the first thing we do? We dropped back and invited Charlton onto us. So for the first 15 minutes it was backs to the wall but after the goal, they did not really hurt us.

“I can’t be critical of the lads because they gave everything. I think our fans can see that. It does frustrate me a lot that we’ve not been able to hang on to a lead but Charlton are a good side. We have to learn from it.”

Parry reckoned a disallowed goal by Showunmi late in the second half should have been allowed to stand.

He said: “I saw a midget – our substitute Lateef Elford Alliyu – going up with two of their defenders. The defender flattened the goalkeeper and the ball fell to our centre forward, who put it into the net. Then the referee disallowed it for a foul by the midget. I was just scratching my head, I just have to laugh.

“I can’t afford to get fined for having a go at referees. I don’t get paid well and have a mortgage so if I get fined £1000 I’ll be crying all the way to the bank and my missus won’t give me steak for tea.”
