Millennium magic

FABIO CAPELLO has thrown the whole England captaincy debate into the air again by threatening to change his entire starting line-up for Tuesday night’s friendly with Ghana.

A fortnight of debate about the issue appeared to have been ended thanks to a 2-0 win over Wales in Cardiff.

Yet it seems Capello simply cannot help causing problems for himself.

Having arranged the Ghana encounter to see how some of his fringe players cope with international combat, changes were expected.

But nothing as radical as Capello is considering, with reinstated skipper John Terry and Saturday’s vice-captain Frank Lampard already ruled out, having been released back to their clubs along with Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney and Michael Dawson in an effort to pacify their respective club managers.

“I will make 11 changes,” he said.

“We have to wait a little bit to see what the team will be but I want to respect the clubs and I need to look at different players.

“I don’t know what will happen about the captain.”

As Capello revealed Terry had been struggling with a niggling injury for the final 20 minutes at the Millennium Stadium, it is quite possible the Chelsea star would have been unavailable anyway.

However, in claiming he was saddened at the way the armband was passed around during the friendly with over Denmark last month, it would seem bizarre in the extreme if Capello’s selection policy triggered a similar scenario.

It has echoes of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s infamous decision to replace his entire starting line-up during a home defeat by Australia in February 2003.
