Parry hails ‘complete performance
MANAGER Les Parry saluted the ‘complete’ Tranmere performance that delivered a best of season 4-0 win over Exeter and guaranteed League One football at Prenton Park for another season.
What pleased me most was the performance was sustained over 90 minutes,” Parry said after goals from Michael Kay, Lucas Akins (two) and Enoch Showunmi lifted Rovers nine points clear of the relegation places with two games remaining.
“I thought our first half show was exceptional and I was praying we would not take our foot off the gas in the second half as we often do – and we didn’t. I knew if we carried on from the first half performance we would score more goals.
“We looked at how Exeter played – and they like to play a lot of football – and we wanted to make them kick it long because they have no height up front. It worked.”
The only setback for Rovers was that Showunmi took a painful blow on the shin and could miss the last two games, at Leyton Orient on Saturday and at home to Swindon Town a week later.
As Tranmere climbed to 17th, Parry said he was ready to seek talks with chairman Peter Johnson about his own future and those of his coaching staff.
Parry’s current one-year deal ends this summer and the situation is complicated by an element of uncertainty over future control of the boardroom. Johnson is currently in talks with American investment group Club 9 Sports over the potential sale of his 60% shareholding.
Parry said: “Until we were sure of staying up, I did not think I had any aces in my hand. I don’t know what is happening with the Americans but I need to sit down with the chairman, not for me but for my staff, who have pulled their tripe out this year.”
