Tranmere Rovers manager Les Parry warns players not to let up

LES PARRY isn’t expecting any takers among his Tranmere squad when he offers a day off to anyone who does not want to put in the maximum effort at Leyton Orient tomorrow.

Rovers head for Brisbane Road in relaxed mood having made their League One status mathematically secure with a handsome 4-0 win over Exeter City on Easter Monday.

Manager Parry says the temptation to regard the season’s task as complete is understandable – but reckons his players share the view that there is still serious work to be done in squeezing the maximum reward from the last two games of the campaign.

Parry said: “History shows it can be difficult to motivate players once an objective has been achieved, not just here but at any club. Once players perceive themselves as being safe they can take their foot of the pedal a little bit.

“We have to make sure it does not happen. We will be saying to the lads: if anyone does feel that way I don’t have a problem. I won’t hold it against anybody. I will bring in someone else who is hungry and wants to have a go.

“But I know our lads. They have the same aim as me. They want it on their CV that they finished as high as they possibly could in the division this season. So I’m sure they will give everything.”

Parry’s opposite number Russell Slade won’t have to make any such offer to his players. Orient hold an outside chance of squeezing into a play-off spot but need nothing short of a victory to keep those hopes alive.

“It’s a dream to go into our last home game of the season with everything still to play for,” said Slade. “Everything we had to do over Easter we did. We couldn’t have done any more – and we did it with six players missing.”

Tranmere, having effectively killed off Exeter City’s promotion ambitions on Monday, could do the same to the Londoners by delivering a performance of similar quality at Brisbane Road.
