Owain Fon Williams is eyeing full Wales call-up with Tranmere Rovers

OWAIN FON WILLIAMS is banking on a summer move to Tranmere Rovers to help his ambitions of winning full international honours with Wales.

The 24-year-old from a village near Caernarfon began training with the League One club this week after signing a two-year contract at Prenton Park.

Fon Williams picked up 11 Wales caps at under-21 level during a career that began with Crewe Alexandra and developed at Stockport and Rochdale.

He’s been involved with the full Wales squad on three occasions and hopes success with Tranmere in the forthcoming season can push him into the calculations of international boss Gary Speed.

“If I play well for Tranmere and get a game every week and hopefully there’s no reason why I can’t be involved with Wales,” Fon Williams said.

“Travelling with a full squad was a really good experience and hopefully getting a call-up won’t be too far away.”

Fon Williams arrived at Prenton Park with more than 100 games of experience with Stockport, Bury and Rochdale behind him – and after completing a short contract at Spotland over the second half of last season.

He said: “Tranmere is an ambitious club and that suits me. I hope to play at the highest level one day. I’ve always said I wanted to get to the very top.

“As a little boy I would dream of lifting the FA Cup or winning the league title and following that dream keeps me on my toes, keeps my drive going. I have just come from one club where they had the right setup to do well and I think Tranmere could be a club on the same lines as Rochdale.”

Fon Williams played 22 games in helping Rochdale achieve their best League position for 40 years in 2010/11.

He said: “It was a small squad at Rochdale and we benefited from having no injuries.

“But everyone knew their job and it worked well. Now I’m looking forward to the challenge at Tranmere.

“We’ve seen some massive teams dropping down from the Championship into League One. I’m looking forward to playing against the likes of Sheffield United and Preston and going to grounds like Hillsborough.”

Fon Williams was the top target for manager Les Parry when it became clear Tony Warner, the vastly experienced goalkeeper who played the second half of last season on a short-term contract, could not be tempted into a season-long commitment to Prenton Park.
