Tranmere Rovers to play Liverpool XI in final pre-season game before big kick-off on Saturday

TRANMERE complete their pre-season programme with a friendly against a Liverpool XI at Prenton Park tonight, with an earlier than usual kick-off time of 7pm.

Rovers will be looking for the same sort of test they were set by the bright young prospects of Manchester United’s reserve side a week ago – and that could mean another footballing treat for spectators.

The 1-1 draw against United last Wednesday was followed by an impressive 2-0 win at Shrewsbury two days later.

Manager Les Parry’s team look as if they are coming nicely to the boil ahead of the opening game of the League One campaign against Chesterfield at Prenton Park on Saturday.

Parry said: “The Shrewsbury game could not have gone better for us. The performance was excellent. Playing Shrewsbury was as close as we are going to get a facing League One opposition, so it was important we put in a decent performance.”

Parry, who has been careful throughout the summer to limit the impact of injuries to the squad, may tonight leave out some of the players who will be on duty against Chesterfield.

Meanwhile ex-Tranmere midfielder Jack Mackreth has joined Blue Square Premier club Barrow on a one-year contract. Mackreth left Prenton Park in May after completing a first-year pro contract with Rovers.
