MANAGER Les Parry saluted a “magnificent” Tranmere performance at Charlton and insisted: “We deserved all three points, not just one.”
The League One leaders had to rely on a disputed Johnnie Jackson penalty on 80 minutes to snatch a share of the spoils at The Valley after Adam McGurk put Rovers 1-0 ahead shortly after the half-hour mark.
Parry said: “The lads were disappointed in the dressing room afterwards but the fact they felt that way after taking a point at Charlton tells you how far we’ve come. It was a magnificent performance from all the lads.
“We’ve played well in our last three away games against three of the strongest teams in the league, Huddersfield, Preston and Charlton. We only have one point to show for our efforts but if we maintain these performance levels we’re going to pick up good results against teams lower down the division.
“Our form is good. I think we are a little bit unfortunate in our league position (12th). I am not saying we should be top but we deserve to be two or three places higher up.”
Parry was unable to shed light on the incident that prompted referee Darren Drysdale to point to the penalty spot on 80 minutes as players jostled to challenge for a right wing corner.
He said: “I did not see the incident but the lads have said that if the referee gives a penalty for that level of contact, there would be 20 penalties in every game.
“I said before we went out that they should not expect anything from the referee because we were away to a bigger club.
“It does not matter what the referees and their people say, you just don’t get decisions when you are away to bigger clubs. You have to accept it. You are not going to get the rub of the green and I don’t think the referee disappointed me.”
Parry said he was delighted to see McGurk notch his first goal of the campaign and said he asked target man Enoch Showunmi to find the form of last season.
“I told him we needed to see the Enoch of old, the hard work and getting on the end of chances,” Parry said. “I thought he was magnificent.”
Parry said he is likely to make some changes to the side when Tranmere replay their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie with Accrington Stanley on Wednesday evening, following last week’s abandoned game.
Rovers have declined an invitation from Accrington manager John Coleman to score a goal unopposed, as a gesture to the fact they were leading 2-1 when the original fixture was called off in the 39th minute following a head injury to home defender Tom Bender.
