Southport leave it late, Vauxhall Motors stall while Runcorn Town book a place in round three of the FA Vase

SOUTHPORT left it late – very late – but ultimately emerged victorious from their Blue Square League Premier Division clash against bottom club Bath City.

Tony Gray was the Sandgrounders’ hero netting an 87th minute equaliser with a shot from 12 yards.

He then fired home the match-winner a minute from time.

Bath had taken a 76th minute lead via a Shaun Canham header and seemed destined for the points before Gray was to have the final say.

Liam Watson’s side are now third in the table just five points behind leaders Wrexham.

IN Blue Square North, Vauxhall Motors’ hopes of moving away from the wrong end of the table were dealt a blow as they went down to a 2-1 defeat at Workington. Early goals from Paul Johnson and Lee Andrews put Motors in a hole, and although Leighton McGivern reduced the arrears with a 48th minute penalty, they couldn’t find an equaliser.

RUNCORN TOWN booked themselves a place in the third round of the FA Vase after earning a 2-0 win at Castleford-based team Glasshoughton Welfare.

A header from Mark Keddie midway through the opening half put the Cheshire side in control of the tie.

And they doubled their advantage just before the hour mark when Warren Bellew fired home. Town cruised the rest of the way to ensure their passage into the next round of the competition.
