Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday League champions Queens Park are too strong for Derby Lane Gym in the FA National Sunday Cup second round

HOULIHAN’S Birkenhead Sunday League Premier champions Queens Park proved far too strong for Derby Lane Gym in the second round of the FA National Sunday Cup.

The visitors’ cause wasn’t helped as they were reduced to 10 men after just seven minutes, although they still created a couple of chances.

Terry Cotgrave broke the deadlock on 25 minutes when his free-kick managed to evade everyone and find its way into the far corner to give Queens a lead which they held until half-time.

The home side dominated the early exchanges of the second half and extended their lead on 62 minutes when a Cotgrave free-kick was headed home brilliantly at the back post by Rob Courtenay.

Ryan Thompson scored a third at the back post with a couple of minutes to go, to confirm a convincing 3-0 win.

In The Cheshire Sunday Cup third round, Heygarth FC (Steve Forbes 2, Lee Yarlett, Mark Jones) had an extra-time 4-2 win at Rock Ferry Social (Cairns pen, Baird). Shore Villa (Olly James, Sam Hunt, Adam Lea) won 3-2 at Thorne P&H.
