THE majority of the area’s non-League teams have the New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day weekend off.
Matches in the Evo-Stik League and North West Counties League are set to take place on Bank Holiday Monday – a preview of those fixtures will be in your Liverpool Daily Post on Monday and a full round-up of the action in the following day’s paper.
However, two local sides are playing this weekend as the Blue Square Bet League’s programme all kicks-off on New Year’s Day afternoon.
Arguably the match of the day in the Conference is the reverse of the clash on Boxing Day when third-placed Southport entertain second-placed Fleetwood Town.
The match last Monday afternoon produced four goals and one red card and saw the spoils shared as second-placed Fleetwood twice recovered from a goal down to eventually draw 2-2.
Tony Gray netted both goals for the third-placed Sandgrounders.
This time, though, Liam Watson’s side will have home advantage and a bumper crowd is promised at Haig Avenue on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile in the Blue Square Bet North, 18th-placed Vauxhall Motors are heading to North Wales to take on 12th-placed Colwyn Bay, eager to complete a swift league double over the Welshmen following their 1-0 win on Boxing Day.
Motors won that encounter thanks to a last-minute strike from Kevin Holsgrove.
Both matches kick-off at 3pm.
