Ian Doyle: Sir Alex Ferguson’s rage at Champions League elimination hides the truth that Real Madrid deserved to win

LET’S get one thing straight. At the risk of disagreeing with Roy Keane (never a clever move) there’s no way Nani should have been sent off for his foul on Alvaro Arbeloa.

However, the whining from Manchester United – and Sir Alex Ferguson’s brattish refusal to attend a post-match press conference, hardly the behaviour of a 71-year-old knight – overlooks some key facts.

Real Madrid had a perfectly good goal disallowed at 0-0.

They should have had a penalty, with Rafael red-carded.

And Madrid even had to score United’s solitary goal for them.

But yes, apart from all that, United can count themselves really unlucky to be out of the Champions League. Bless.
