Roberto Martinez says Everton have proved they are no ‘one trick pony’ after a battling win over Hull City.
The Blues manager has brought a new style of play to Goodison Park this season but saw his team rely on their ability to grind out a result on Saturday.
Martinez says the manner in which Everton win is important but he knows it would be foolish to completely abandon such qualities – especially as it gives him attacking options.
However, the Catalan boss admits that he would never be happy with a ‘smash and grab’ victory.
“What’s important is that when you are mastering a way of play you could have other options,” Martinez said.
“We showed on Saturday that we are more than one trick pony.
“We will be stupid not to know use the strengths of our players.
“We are here to win football games and do it in a controlled, pleasing manner with a clear pattern of play.
“The three points are going to help us do what we want to do.
“Style is very important. We had more possession than Hull, more attacking moves and controlled the game.
“If you go somewhere, sit behind the ball, get 20% of the play and come away with a sneaky win I don’t enjoy those.
“You need find a way to break things down and win the game, by taking responsibility if wanting the ball.
“In the first half we had the ball. Hull were pressing high up and hitting us on the counter.
“In the second half we handled that and got the three points we deserved.
“If you win without style and knowing what you are doing it is going to be short term victories.
“If you do it in a certain way you will get better and stronger so style matters a lot.”
