GREAT BRITAIN centre Martin Gleeson has signed a new contract with Warrington that will keep him at the Halliwell Jones Stadium until the end of the 2010 season.
The 27-year-old has scored 34 tries in 78 Super League appearances and created countless more for his winger, Henry Fa’afili, since joining the Wolves from St Helens for a reported £200,000 transfer fee in July 2004.
His original contract was not due to run out until the end of next season but he is delighted to commit his future to the club.
“I’m glad to have tied up my future with the Wolves,” he said. “The club have been very good to me since I joined three years ago.
“Although this last year was very hit and miss for us with the terrible amount of injuries we suffered, I feel with the four signings we have made, not forgetting the quality we already have in the squad, the future here looks an exciting one that I want to be part of.”
Warrington coach Paul Cullen is especially excited by the prospect of new signing Matt King, the Australia Test centre, lining up alongside Gleeson, who won his 20th Great Britain cap in last Saturday’s third-Test win over New Zealand.
“World-class threequarters are few and far between,” he said. “The combination of Martin Gleeson at right centre and Matt King at left centre is a very exciting prospect.
“Martin suffered a fractured knee early in mid-season, leaving him on the sidelines, unable to run for six weeks. To then go on to produce a great effort in our fight for the top six and then play exceptionally well for GB in the Test series is testament to his character.”
