WIDNES VIKINGS chairman Steve O’Connor has appointed Alex Bonney as the club’s new chief executive.
Bonney, 48, was O’Connor group’s finance director and became financial controller when O’Connor became part of the Stobart Group earlier this year.
He replaces Pete Barrow, who has stood down from the position that he has held on a part-time basis since December 2005.
Barrow said: “I had the opportunity to work with Alex but felt it would be in the best interests of the club if I moved aside for him to implement the new business plans which will take the club forward and secure Vikings’ long-term future.
“I’ve enjoyed my spell at Widnes despite the trauma of the old club’s financial difficulties and wish the team well for the future.”
O’Connor said: “Pete had to steer the club through some very difficult circumstances and I would like to thank him for the efforts he has made on behalf of Vikings and wish him all the best.
“Alex Bonney, who has worked with me for over six years, is immensely experienced and is the person to bring stability to the operation.”
Meanwhile, Widnes will clash with old rivals Wigan Warriors in the club’s first pre-season friendly at Halton Stadium on Sunday, January 27.
Widnes are chasing former Halifax scrum-half Ben Black, who is currently playing for Queensland Cup side Burleigh Bears but he has requested a release from his contract.
