SAINT Helens Rugby club cancelled an end- of-season homecoming yesterday after a sub- station fire cut their ground’s electricity.
Homeowners living near the Saints’ Knowsley Road home reported hearing an explosion shortly before 1am on Sunday.
Fire crews were called to the ground to douse the fire, apparently caused by an electrical fault.
More than 5,000 fans were expected at the ground yesterday to bid farewell to coach Daniel Anderson and watch the team parade the Challenge Cup. Anderson will return to his native Australia after his term at Knowsley Road came to an end.
But safety officials pulled the plug on the event because of the power outage. Residents on Willow Avenue, which abuts the stadium, also lost power. It was the weekend’s second disappointing blow to the club.
The Rugby League side were beaten 24:16 by Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final on Saturday night.
