Oldershaw want clean start

OLDERSHAW rugby union club are ready for a fresh start this season after suffering an unfortunate 2006/07 campaign.

The Belvidere club ran into trouble after a referee abandoned a game against Widnes and the RFU punishment was severe.

They have been demoted to South Lancashire/Cheshire Two and also have a seven points starting penalty.

A new committee has now been put in place and last season’s coach Ian Stead and skipper Gavin Scott are staying in office.

Oldershaw will have a few new faces and some returning senior players to boost the squad, but in the main will rely on the same band of youngsters

“The lads feel they owe it to themselves and the club to rectify what happened last season,” said Scott.

“They are putting in some hard work in training and with encouragement from other clubs have been spurred on to turn things round and restore Oldershaw’s reputation as a decent junior club.”

Oldershaw’s first league game will be at home to local rivals Wallasey on September 8 and they will start with a cross river derby at home to Sefton on September 1 in the EDF Energy Senior Vase.
