County stalwart dies

RUGBY UNION – and Lancashire in particular – has lost a great friend and dedicated supporter with the recent death of Ted Whiteside.

A former president of the Red Rose county, he was a hooker with the Heaton Moor club during his playing days, but latterly became a member of the Southport club.

He was a long-time member of the county and was a fervent supporter of the county team. He served for many years on county committees, particularly the disciplinary committee.

He was the 65th president of the county during 2002-2003 and it was fitting that such a strong supporter of County Rugby should see Lancashire beat Gloucestershire in the County Championship final at Twickenham.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 31, 12noon at St. Maries, Seabrook Road, Southport.

Donations in memory may be sent to Queenscourt Hospice at www.queenscourt.org.uk and www.justgiving.com/queenscourthospice.
