CALDY opened their account in the national leagues with a welcome victory against Hull Ionians at Paton Field last Saturday.
It is fair to say that both sides will play better with Caldy looking a little nervy while the visitors lacked cohesion as they were bedding in numerous new recruits to their ranks.
Simon Mason gave Caldy the lead with a penalty kick and they finished the half with a fine try from scrum-half Matt Bennett after some excellent forward play from Wood and Douridge.
The visitors nibbled away at the deficit with two penalty kicks from James Ferguson until a fine catch and drive from a Caldy lineout inside the Hull 22 saw them drive over the line and Richard Bradshaw scored.
Mason pulled the kick to leave the score at 13-6 but the visitors were not to be kept down as they produced their own catch and drive move but Ferguson’s kicking form deserted him for the extras.
As the game entered stoppage time Caldy clung to the 13-11 advantage.
This weekend Caldy make the trip across the pennies to Beverley. Although coming second to Caldy in North One last year, Beaver Park was one of the hurdles that Caldy fell at.
Indeed, they have consistently enjoyed good home form for some years and Caldy will know that they need to be at their best to come away with a victory.
Elsewhere, the Lions produced a fine victory over Altrincham Kersal second team in the Bateman’s Premiership while the third team went down narrowly at home to Eagle.
In the Halbro North West Colts League Caldy’s U17s won 12-10 at Broughton Park while the U19s lost 5-0 at Kendal.
