Rugby Union: Thrilling first game

THE first league clash between newly-promoted Northwich and Winnington Park on the opening day of the North Two West season resulted in a thrilling 16-16 draw at Moss Farm.

Amateurs Winnington were handicapped by an early injury to back Steve Jones, who suffered a double leg fracture and will be out for the season.

They led 13-6 only to fall 16-13 behind to two tries by Rick Smith before Ben Elliot saved their bacon with a late drop goal. Elliot scored 11 of Park’s points and looks a real find.

Gary Bell kicked six points for Northwich with new recruits hooker Fred Taylor, prop Matt Barber and second row forward Ian Lear doing well.

On Saturday, Winnington go to Birkenhead Park, while Northwich are at Stockport.
