Rugby Union: Birkenhead Park 15, Huddersfield 14

A LAST-DITCH drop goal from 40 metres by Rob Johnson put paid to Birkenhead in North One.

Park were never behind in the match until the defining moment deep into added on time.

In the end they paid for a lack of kicking success after out-gunning their opponents three tries to one. Dave Blythe crossed in the fifth minute after good forward work and there was another well-worked touchdown by Jon Sewell on the half hour. But it was 10-10 at the interval with Johnson landing a penalty for the visitors and adding the conversion to a try by Mark Whitehead, when Park had a player in the sin bin.

A rolling maul brought the third Park try from Christian Jones near the end of the third quarter. But there was no kick on target on the day and Johnson made them pay with a penalty on 70 minutes and then the match-winner.
