ANSELMIANS came close to a derby upset away to neighbouring Wirral in South Lancashire/Cheshire One League.
It needed a penalty try deep in the final quarter to tip the balance in favour of the Clatterbridge side. They won 19-13 but only after Anselmians looked like holding on to the half-time advantage they had at 13-12.
Alistair Baker and Craig Harvey scored the other Wirral tries with Paul Brett and Scott Tunna touching down for the losers.
Hoylake suffered a second defeat this time at home to Isle of Man outfit Vagabonds and know they must improve to keep away from the relegation zone.
Ruskin Park beat Bowdon 27-18 but Wigan went under 27-7 at Wilmslow.
Widnes breathed a huge sigh of relief as they got home 29-22 at Aspull for a first success.
Coach Lee McDermott described it as, “A bit of an ugly win” but nevertheless it was one they were happy to take.
