THE demons of last season still appear to haunt Waterloo as two moments of indiscipline almost certainly cost them the match as they went down 16-9 away to Henley Hawks at Dry Leas last Saturday.
A yellow card for David York in the 26th minute led to a try by
Matt Payne in the 27th for Henley to take the lead after three penalties from Alex Davies to two from Barry Reeves had put the visitors 9-6 ahead. The second half was a turgid affair with neither side putting together any meaningful patterns of play.
There were far too many mistakes and wrong options taken but as the half wore on Martin O’Keefe became the second Waterloo player to be consigned to the sin bin and once again Henley made their numbers count with Payne crossing for a second try to take the match.
Waterloo have some serious thinking to do. Such profligacy did not serve them well last term and it needs addressing now if it is not to become an issue this.
Keeping 15 men on the field at this level of rugby is essential if they are to compete at the top end of this league.
