Rugby Union: Soutar rocked at close

LAST SEASON’S leading points scorer Andy Soutar was denied grabbing the spoils at Red Rocks with the last kick of the game.

After his side had let slip an early lead, they were presented with a late penalty opportunity. However the missed chance left the Merseysiders, with their second defeat in a week, in the bottom half of the National Three North.

Park started well with Soutar scampering under the posts for a converted try inside two minutes. Fly-half Rob Hitchmough slotted over a neat drop goal before Ionians fought back.

No. 8 Robert Kench powered over for James Ferguson to reduce the deficit with his conversion.

Kench crashed over again for Ferguson to convert to give the visitors the lead. Home winger Kalan Warburton touched down and Soutar added the extras.

The scoreline moved back in the visitors’ favour when prop Neil Lyons powered over. Hitchmough darted over with Soutar converting before Ionians added a converted pushover try.
