LSH came off second best in a closely-fought contest between two evenly-matched teams.
However, on this evidence, both sides will be spending the rest of the season looking anxiously downwards rather than upwards in North One.
The loss of the influential Simon Worsley with a hamstring injury after just four minutes did not help their cause, but neither did the subsequent sin-binning of replacement centre Ben Mousley and prop Dave Conway in each half.
An early Ashley Worsfold penalty was levelled by Darlington’s Evan Haigh. The home side went ahead with a try from flanker Andy Tonkin followed by another Haigh penalty to lead 11-3.
LSH, whose spirit and endeavour was never in doubt, hit back with a nicely worked try from winger Dave Birch just before the break, converted by Worsfold. Darlington went eight points clear with a converted try from Anthony Lewis before LSH finally clicked into gear. Mousley powered through for a fine try after good work from Mark Dickinson, converted by Worsfold, but in a frantic finale LSH were unable to score again.
