LSH lost out in a North One thriller after a much improved performance.
They led for much of the game, fighting back after being overhauled and then sunk by a late penalty. Even then, only the left hand upright denied them as Ashley Worsfold’s 84th minute penalty agonisingly struck the post.
A third minute catch and drive try from skipper Phil Kearns set LSH on their way, converted by Worsfold, who added a penalty. Sheffield’s Zak Hill slotted two penalties before centre Ben Mousley roared through for LSH’s second try, converted by Worsfold to leave them 17-6 in front.
Although Sheffield hit back with a converted try from Ernst Oosterhuizen, LSH maintained their lead with an opportunist try from Mousley, converted by Worsfold. Sheffield came back strongly with two tries from replacement flanker Tom Rice, Hill converting one to give the visitors a 25-24 lead.
LSH, with a cohesive and effective pack, applied pressure and a Worsfold penalty regained the lead before Hill snatched it back with 80 minutes gone. Four minutes later the woodwork was the deciding factor.
