Rugby Union: One club mentality reaping reward for North West club of the year

CALDY has always been the most attractive district on Merseyside and its rugby union club was always extremely popular.

It surprised me that it has not moved forward sooner, but Saturday proved that it really is becoming a dynamic as well as an increasingly successful organisation. In the last six years it has put the emphasis on youth development, and done it so successfully it has now won the RFU Seal of Approval three years in a row.

Last year it was again recognised by the RFU as the North West club of the year.

Starting with teams that run from under-7s to the usual colts, the club really has quite a staggering volume of youngsters, with more than 200 taking part up to the age of 12 and virtually every older age group handling in excess of 30, generally with a good deal of success.

When visiting Caldy to see them take on Preston last Saturday, it was stressed to me that they are a fully inclusive and what they call a ‘one club’, which puts the emphasis firmly on supporting every single member.
