Rugby Union: Leigh 26, New Brighton 12

LEIGH shocked New Brighton with this EDF Energy National Trophy first round victory.

Two weeks ago, the Blues had won 27-6 in a North Two West League clash but Leigh were good value gaining touch downs via Paul Wilcox, Ryan McKinsty and Dennis Day. There was also a penalty try while Wilcox secured three conversions.

New Brighton for whom it was a first defeat had to settle for tries via Alistair Child and Vin Dutton plus a conversion by Stephen Dean.

The Blues rested a number of key players and came under a lot of pressure through lack of good possession.
