Rugby Union: Sefton slump out of Vase

SEFTON met with a 17-0 EDF Energy Senior Vase reverse at the hands of Huddersfield YMCA as they paid the penalty for fielding a weakened line-up.

They rarely looked like opening their account while the opposition secured a trio of tries plus a conversion.

Aspull, Wigan and Ruskin Park all made progress. Aspull saw off Oldham 28-8. Wigan came away 31-19 to the good from Didsbury Toc H and Ruskin Park beat Ormskirk 19-8.

There was no way forward for Southport but they battled bravely in a 16-12 reverse against visiting Leodiensians.

Parkonians went out of the Junior Vase 19-8 at home to Burley. Terry Williams gained a try and a penalty.

Ellesmere Port fell 34-10 at home to Rotherham Clifton and Mossley Hill came a 102-7 cropper at Barnsley

Prenton withdrew from a return trip to Trentham because several players had morning work commitments. They instead played a Lees Cheshire Plate first round tie against Port Sunlight and won 17-7.

Neil Hunt crossed twice and Andrew Johnston landed the conversions and one penalty. Sunlight scored a converted try in a close contest.

West Park Warriors went out of the Lancashire Plate 34-7 against Littleborough after holding their higher graded opponents up to half-time. Gareth Bass gained a try converted by Jeremy Dowling.

Capenhurst edged out Linley 22-20 in South Lancashire/Cheshire Four League.
