Rugby Union: Ladies’ promotion push

ARGUABLY the most successful side on Merseyside this season have been Waterloo Ladies, who have only lost a single game in the Northern Division of the Championship.

Waterloo have long been boosted by former World Cup winner and national president Gill Burns and they are now reinforced by the presence of Rachel Brown, a full-time coach who trains not only the women but the men at Liverpool University.

Needless to say, she is also a pretty useful player, who scored one of the three tries her Waterloo team claimed against Carlisle last weekend, without reply.

Brown is just one of several excellent players in the Waterloo jersey.

The star turn at present is Jennifer Davies, a current Welsh international, who appears in several different positions ranging from prop to hooker to flanker.

The team’s most recent performance was a 15-0 victory over Carlisle with three tries coming from Helen Price, a full-back from Worcester who is at Liverpool University, coach Brown and winger Rachel Hoult.

It was an assured display ensuring they kept up their fine league record and are up near the top, with promotion to the Premiership a real possibility.

They do not play matches as regularly as the men, with their next a home clash with Vale of Lune on Sunday week, but genuinely believe they have a reasonable chance of gaining promotion.
